Wyatt
Wyatt had been piecing together clues all week, until he was beginning to feel like Nancy Drew, stealthily dropping hints, asking questions, watching for reactions. At first, he’d been inclined to give Cory the benefit of the doubt about his cooking abilities, but as the week went one, the clues became harder to ignore.
Finally, he had a few minutes alone with the sous chef, Miguel, who had been at Flavor since the doors first opened, and the opportunity to put the pieces together was too good to resist.
“Miguel, when did Cory become the front-of-house manager?” Wyatt asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
While the question seemed innocent enough, Wyatt had tried to word it in a way that would be impossible to deny that Cory had in fact been the chef at Flavor at one time. And even though Wyatt hadn’t been one hundred percent sure, he was operating on a pretty good hunch that that had been the case.
“I don’t remember exactly,” Miguel mumbled. “It’s been a while.”
Wyatt nodded. That wasn’t exactly the answer he’d been looking for, but it was a start.
“So… he just got tired of cooking?”
Miguel looked distinctly uncomfortable with the direction the conversation was heading, but he was right in the middle of mixing the dough, so Wyatt knew that he wouldn’t be able to make up an excuse to walk away for at least a few more minutes.
“I don’t think he got tired of it, no,” Miguel said, speaking slowly, as if he was measuring each word. “But it isn’t something we really talk about. There aren’t many people who still work here from back then.”
“But surely Elise didn’t make him step down? I can’t picture that at all…”
Wyatt was hoping to keep things light and conversational, but there wasn’t really an easy way to ask the kinds of questions he needed answers to. He’d just have to hope that Miguel would keep playing along, although the look on the sous chef’s face indicated otherwise. In fact, Miguel looked as if he might turn and run at any moment, whether the dough was ready or not.
“No, Elise didn’t have anything to do with it. She only traded jobs with Cory because he asked her to.”
“I don’t understand. Why would he ask her to do that?”
Miguel hesitated, and for several seconds, he kept his eyes downcast, watching the dough as it flopped around in the large mixer. Wyatt was about to repeat the question when Miguel finally made eye contact again.
“He didn’t have a choice,” he said, quietly. “I’m sorry, that’s all I can say. It’s not something we really talk about here, so if you have any more questions, you’ll have to ask Cory.”
With that statement, Miguel went back to intently watching his dough. Wyatt was tempted to press for a little more information, but decided against it. Miguel had made it pretty clear that he was done talking, and even though Wyatt desperately wanted to know more—had hoped to understand more about what motivated Cory—he knew he needed to back off.
